A Month of Festivities

December, in terms of ministry to students was very short. We only had about a week with all of our students in town, and we only had one service with them. This service was our Christmas service. We partnered with the Newman Catholic Ministry to put on an event for the whole campus, and it went very well! We started it with about 45 minutes of singing Christmas songs, primarily the ones about Jesus, and then we moved into a party with karaoke, food catered by Chiloso, some games for the students to play, and a photo booth. The party was a great success! We had a lot of people come by to see what we were doing, and we had a lot of participation from both organizations.

This event was a bit sad for me though. This was the last event I had with a guy in my small group named Ryan Healy. I met Ryan over 2 years ago when I was still a student at UTD. I was with my small group leader at the time and we noticed Ryan sitting alone at UTD's center square wearing a bracelet with some bible verse on it. We invited him to join us because our group was meeting in about 30 minutes, and he came. Ryan and I hit it off pretty quick on the way over to the apartment for group. We were only about half a year apart in school, and we were in the same major. From there Ryan and I were in small group again the next year together, we took a couple of classes together, and we spent a bunch of time together outside of class. Ryan graduated in December, and On January 17th, he leaves Dallas to go start a job at Disney in Orlando. It stinks for me, but I am really excited for him.

After the party, the only other major thing to happen was the apprentice sermons. All of us were given the same prompt of "What is your gospel?". The idea being what does the good news mean to you. We all had very different sermons, based a lot on our experience in life so far and our experience in the apprenticeship. I talked about "In God's eyes, I am good enough." I personally have felt that a lot through the apprenticeship, I haven't done a "good enough" job. I didn't care what my co-workers, or even what my supervisors were saying because I had decided it wasn't good enough. Through my sermon, I talked about my struggle with this mindset, the verses that helped me escape that, and how I see this applying to my ministry. I got good feedback for this sermon, and I look forward to my next sermon in May to put it into feedback!
